Expanded Access to Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) - Frequent Traveller Stream

published on 09 December 2024

On 7 December 2024, new changes came into effect for the Visitor (Subclass 600) visa - Frequent Traveller Stream (FTS), broadening its eligibility criteria and simplifying application requirements. These updates, introduced by the Migration (Arrangements for Visitor (Class FA) visa applications) Amendment (LIN 24/084) Instrument 2024, mark a significant shift in Australia’s visa framework, opening doors to a wider range of travellers from across the Asia-Pacific region.

Key Changes in the Frequent Traveller Stream

Previously, the Frequent Traveller Stream was restricted to applicants holding a passport issued by the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and applications had to be lodged while the applicant was physically located in the PRC. This restriction has now been removed.

Under the new rules:

  • Applicants can lodge their application from outside Australia
  • This change eliminates location-based limitations, providing greater flexibility for applicants.

Expanded Passport Eligibility
The Frequent Traveller Stream now extends to passport holders from the following countries, provided their passports indicate their nationality:

  • Brunei Darussalam
  • Cambodia
  • Indonesia
  • Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos)
  • Malaysia
  • The People’s Republic of China
  • The Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Thailand
  • Timor-Leste
  • Vietnam (Viet Nam)

This expansion reflects Australia’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with its regional neighbours, promoting tourism, and facilitating seamless travel.

What This Means for Applicants

  • Simplified Processes: With the removal of restrictive location requirements, eligible travellers can apply from their country of residence or any other eligible location outside Australia.
  • Enhanced Access for Regional Travelers: Citizens from 11 countries now have access to this streamlined visa option, promoting ease of travel for frequent visitors.
  • 10 Year Visa Grant Period: Up to 10 years grant period with stay periods of 3 months at a time. (For a maximum of 12 months within 24 month period)

The updates align with Australia’s broader strategy to encourage tourism, strengthen economic partnerships, and enhance regional connectivity. By expanding the pool of eligible applicants, the Frequent Traveller Stream becomes a more inclusive pathway for travellers who regularly visit Australia for leisure, family reunions, or business purposes.
