What is the MATES Program?
MATES is a bilateral initiative under the Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA) between Australia and India, established in May 2023. This scheme facilitates the temporary mobility of young Indian professionals to live, work, and contribute to the Australian economy. Through MATES, Australia aims to foster cross-border skills transfer and enhance industry capabilities, particularly in high-demand sectors.

English Proficiency: Must demonstrate proficient English skills, with an IELTS score of at least 6 overall and no component below 5.
The MATES program does not require sponsorship from an Australian employer, which simplifies the application process and makes it accessible to talented individuals looking to advance their skills independently.
Benefits and Opportunities for MATES Participants
The MATES visa allows participants to:
Live and Work in Australia for Up to Two Years: Visa holders can work across various industries and are encouraged to expand their professional networks and expertise.
Bring Dependents: Spouses and dependent children can accompany the visa holder, with work rights granted to spouses.
Program Caps and Family Options
The MATES program will launch as a pilot with a cap of 3,000 primary visas per year. Dependents do not count toward this cap, ensuring a focused allocation for skilled applicants.
Can MATES Visa Holders Extend Their Stay?
While the MATES visa is temporary, participants can explore other Australian visa options if they wish to extend their stay or pursue permanent residency, provided they meet the relevant requirements.
When Will Applications Open?
Applications for MATES will be accepted starting in late 2024. The application process will likely include associated fees, including additional costs for dependents and potential language testing fees.
The ballot is expected to open in December 2024 which is the first step of the process.
The MATES program is an excellent opportunity for young Indian professionals eager to build their careers in Australia. With its focus on sectors that are critical to both countries' economies, MATES is not only about migration but also about creating mutually beneficial connections and fostering a global exchange of knowledge and skills.
