Exciting Changes to the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) December 2024 Update

published on 21 December 2024

The Australian Government has recently introduced significant updates to the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) through the Migration Amendment (Graduate Visas No. 2) Instrument (LIN 24/086) 2024. These refinements, particularly in the Post-Higher Education Work (PHEW) stream, aim to streamline academic requirements and ensure that Australia continues to attract skilled graduates who can contribute meaningfully to the workforce.

Key Changes to the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

1. Updated Academic Requirements

To be eligible for the Subclass 485 visa under the PHEW stream, applicants must meet the following updated academic criteria:

  • The degree must be completed at an Australian educational institution within the last six months.
  • It must be registered on CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students).
  • The program must involve at least 16 calendar months of study.
  • It must cover a minimum of two academic years.
  • The degree must be completed entirely in English.
  • The study must have been undertaken while holding a valid student visa.

These updates ensure applicants possess robust academic foundations and align with Australia's broader migration objectives.

2. Revised Definition of 'Degree'

A notable change is the exclusion of graduate certificates as eligible qualifications for the Temporary Graduate Visa. Only degrees at the bachelor’s level or higher are now considered valid qualifications for this visa stream. This refinement underscores the government’s focus on aligning visa eligibility with higher academic standards.

3. Institutional and Degree Clarifications

To meet the updated eligibility criteria, educational institutions must now offer courses specifically at the bachelor’s degree level or higher. This ensures that applicants’ qualifications reflect a higher standard of academic achievement and meet Australia's evolving workforce demands.

Why These Changes Matter

These updates to the Subclass 485 visa are part of a broader initiative to ensure that Australia attracts and retains highly skilled graduates who are well-prepared to integrate into the workforce. By refining academic and institutional requirements, the government aims to maintain the integrity of the visa program while supporting Australia’s long-term economic and migration goals.

Who Will Be Affected?

The changes apply to all visa applications lodged after the commencement of the LIN 24/086 instrument, which is 13th of December 2024. If you’re planning to apply for a Subclass 485 visa, it’s essential to review your eligibility against these new requirements.
