The Department of Home Affairs has released important updates to the English language test requirements for Subclass 482 visas. These changes come into effect on 13 September 2025 and apply to applications lodged on or after this date.
At Rocket & Ash Immigration Law, we’ve summarised the key points you need to know.
Key Changes to Approved English Tests
The Migration (English Language Test Requirements for Subclass 482 Visas) Instrument 2025 (LIN 25/082) introduces several updates, including new approved providers and changes to test sitting rules.
New Test Providers Added
From 13 September 2025, applicants can choose from additional test providers, including:
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP General)
- LANGUAGECERT Academic Test
- Michigan English Test (MET)
In addition:
- The Department now refers to both IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic.
- The Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) is now officially renamed Cambridge Advanced Test (C1 Advanced).
Minimum English Language Test Scores (from 13 September 2025)
For tests taken on or after 13 September 2025, applicants must achieve the following minimum scores in each component (listening, reading, writing, and speaking):
- IELTS General Training / Academic: 5 in each band
- CELPIP General: 5 in each band
- LANGUAGECERT Academic: Listening 41, Reading 44, Writing 45, Speaking 54
- Michigan English Test (MET): Listening 49, Reading 47, Writing 45, Speaking 38
- Occupational English Test (OET): Listening 220, Reading 240, Writing 200, Speaking 270
- PTE Academic: Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29, Speaking 24
- TOEFL iBT: Listening 8, Reading 8, Writing 9, Speaking 14
Note: The Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) is not accepted for Vocational English under Subclass 482 for tests conducted on or after 13 September 2025.
Single Attempt vs. Component Re-Sitting
Previously, applicants were required to achieve their test scores in a single sitting. The new rules provide greater flexibility:
- For tests conducted on or after 13 September 2025, applicants may re-sit an individual test component (for example, speaking or writing). This means IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) and MET SSR are now recognised.
- This means IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) and MET SSR are now recognised.
- For tests conducted before 13 September 2025, applicants must still achieve the minimum score in a single attempt.
This is a significant change that will benefit many applicants who fall just short in one test component.
Validity of Test Results
The validity period remains unchanged:
- English test results are valid for 3 years from the original test date.
- If an applicant re-sits a component, the 3-year period is still calculated from the first test sitting.
Transitional Arrangements
It is important to note:
- If your English test was conducted before 13 September 2025, the old requirements continue to apply.
- If your test is conducted on or after 13 September 2025, the new requirements (including re-sitting options and new providers) will apply.
This means two sets of rules will operate in parallel for a period of time.
What This Means for Applicants
For Subclass 482 visa applicants, these changes provide:
- More choice with new test providers.
- Flexibility to re-sit individual components.
- Clarity on validity and transitional rules.
If you are preparing for your 482 visa application, it’s important to know which rules apply to you depending on when your test was conducted.
