Updated 7th of December 2024
On 7 December 2024, Australia introduced a revolutionary visa option, the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482), to meet the country's critical labour market needs. Among its three distinct streams, the Specialist Skills Stream stands out as a pathway designed for highly skilled professionals earning a premium income. This guide provides all the key details you need to understand about this new opportunity.
What Is the Specialist Skills Stream?
The Specialist Skills Stream is part of the SID visa program, tailored for professionals with specialised expertise and significant earning potential. It replaces the Medium-Term stream of the former Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa while introducing new features to attract top-tier talent.
Key Features of the Specialist Skills Stream
Eligibility Criteria:
- Open to applicants in any ANZSCO/OSCA occupation (excluding ANZSCO Major Groups 3, 7, and 8, which include trade workers, machinery operators, drivers, and labourers).
- Applicants must meet the Specialist Skills Income Threshold, set at a minimum of $135,000 per year.
- Requires one year of full-time employment or equivalent part-time or casual work experience in the last five years. (Unless the occupation requires a minimum additional qualification or experience)
Streamlined Occupations:
- Unlike the Core Skills Stream, this stream does not restrict applicants to a specific occupation list, provided they meet the income threshold and are not excluded by ANZSCO categories.
Permanent Residency Pathway:
- The Specialist Skills Stream provides a pathway to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186).
- The flexibility in ANZSCO codes allows applicants to meet updated occupational groupings without being penalized by changes to the classification system.
English Language Requirements:
- Applicants must achieve an IELTS score of 5 overall, with at least 5 in each component, or an equivalent test score.
- Exemptions for English testing remain consistent with prior TSS visa requirements.
Why Choose the Specialist Skills Stream?
The Specialist Skills Stream is ideal for:
- High-income professionals seeking streamlined migration options.
- Employers looking to bring in top talent for strategic roles with fewer restrictions.
- Flexible occupation options, allowing for more diverse industry representation in Australia’s skilled workforce.
Benefits for Employers
Employers sponsoring through the Specialist Skills Stream benefit from:
- Streamlined processing times for high-value talent. (Suggested 7 day processing timeframes)
- Access to professionals with niche skills who can contribute immediately to critical projects.
- Enhanced flexibility in managing workforce transitions, with employees now having up to 180 days to find a new sponsor if they change jobs.
Application Fees
The visa application charges for the Specialist Skills Stream are:
- Base charge: $3,115.
- Additional charge for applicants 18 or older: $3,115.
- Additional charge for applicants under 18: $780.
How Does the Specialist Skills Stream Compare to the TSS Visa?
- Higher Income Threshold: The $135,000 requirement ensures that only top-tier professionals qualify.
- Wider Occupation Coverage: No reliance on a specific occupation list, opening opportunities across diverse fields.
- Reduced Work Experience: Applicants need only one year of work experience, down from two years under the TSS visa. (Unless the occupation requires additional certification, education or work experience. For example a General Practitioner)
Commencement and Transitional Arrangements
- The Specialist Skills Stream is available for visa applications lodged on or after 7 December 2024.
- Applications made before this date under the TSS visa will continue to be processed under the old rules.
- TSS visa holders can transition to the Specialist Skills Stream if they meet the income and occupation criteria.
Is the Specialist Skills Stream Right for You?
The Specialist Skills Stream offers unmatched advantages for highly skilled professionals and employers alike:
