First-Time Business Sponsorship: The Ultimate Guide (July 2025 Edition)

published on 15 July 2025

Sponsoring an employee for a visa for the first time can feel like stepping into a maze of forms, compliance requirements, and red tape—but it doesn’t have to. Whether you're hiring your first overseas employee or expanding your recruitment strategy to meet labour shortages, this July 2025 guide is here to help you navigate the Australian business sponsorship process with confidence.

What is Business Sponsorship in Australia?

Business sponsorship is the legal process through which Australian employers gain approval to sponsor skilled overseas workers under visas like the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand (SID) visa or Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme.

Once approved as a Standard Business Sponsor, your company can nominate foreign workers to fill critical roles, boosting productivity, bridging skill gaps, and expanding your workforce.

Who Can Apply to Become a Sponsor?

To be eligible, your business must:

  • Be lawfully operating in Australia (Most business structures can become sponsors).

  • Have a genuine need to fill a position with a skilled overseas worker.

  • Demonstrate compliance with Australian workplace laws.

  • Have no adverse information (e.g., past sanctions, insolvency).

You don’t need to be a large company. Many small and medium businesses become sponsors for the first time every year.

The Three-Step Process to Sponsorship

✅ Step 1: Apply for Standard Business Sponsorship

This is your formal application to become an approved sponsor. You’ll need to provide:

  • Your ABN and company registration

  • Business activity evidence (e.g., BAS statements, profit & loss reports)

  • Organisational chart or staffing details

  • Proof that your business has the financial ability to sponsor and support employees

Once approved, your sponsorship lasts for 5 years, during which you can sponsor multiple employees.

✅ Step 2: Nominate the Position

You must show:

  • The job is genuine and in demand

  • It aligns with an occupation on the Core Skills in Demand List (Last Updated Dec 24)

  • You’re offering the market salary rate (and or above the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold) - This is currently $76,515.

  • Labour Market Testing (LMT) has been completed, if required.
  • Genuineness of role- be able to show that the role is genuine within the scope of your business.

You’ll also pay the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy, which varies depending on business size and visa duration.

✅ Step 3: Visa Application for the Employee

Finally, we submit a Subclass 482 or 186 visa application for the employee, including:

  • Identity and qualification documents

  • English test results (if required)

  • Health and character checks

Processing times for Subclass 482 (SID) visas in 2025 on average is 1-5 months, depending on stream and occupation.

Common Mistakes First-Time Sponsors Make

  • Using incorrect or expired financial documents.

  • Failing to complete LMT correctly.

  • Offering below-market salaries or mismatching the job description with ANZSCO roles.
  • Not understanding the genuineness or role criteria.

  • Not understanding ongoing obligations (like record-keeping and monitoring).

These errors can lead to delays or rejections. It’s worth getting expert help from the start of the process.

Ongoing Obligations After Sponsorship Approval

Once you become a sponsor, you must:

  • Keep records of employment terms and visa status

  • Report any changes (e.g., if the employee resigns, changes to the company, etc.)

  • Avoid engaging in discriminatory hiring or employment practices

Failing to comply can result in barred sponsorship rights or civil penalties.

Can You Sponsor on a Casual or Part-Time Basis?

Generally, full-time employment is required for Subclass 482 and 186 sponsorship. Casual or part-time arrangements are not accepted.

Is It Worth It for Your Business?

If you’re facing ongoing skill shortages or require specific expertise unavailable in the local market, yes—business sponsorship is an investment that can pay off in increased capability, loyalty, and long-term stability. With the 2025 streamlined pathways under the Skills in Demand visa program, more roles than ever are now eligible.
